The above map uses the Google Map Application Programming Interface (API) for displaying live the position of a few of the runners. These runners are volunteering to carry a mobile phone with a built-in Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver during their run. The GPS receiver obtains their location with an error of approx. 10 meters. Through a mobile internet connection on the mobile phone, their location is automatically uploaded to this server, where it is displayed on the above map. The table on the left shows the complete list of runners who participate in this tracking demonstration. It is updated every seconds. The small blue icons on the above map display represent the current location of each runner when they last updated their location. You can click on the icon to see name of the runner and some additional data. A click on the name of the runner in the table will also bring up the information window over the runner's icon. This information window will move with the runner as (s)he moves along the course. On the map, the large red icon symbolises the Start/Finish of the Great Run. A click on that icon will open an information window with a video still image from the Start/Finish area, which is updated in regular intervals. The run will start on 10.May at 10:30. This web site will be live and active from around 10:00 until 11:30. Additional info is available at the Leeds Met Website and at the Great Run Website. |
